Pilonidal Sinus Infection and Surgical Treatment
Pilonidal Sinus is also referred to also as Pilonidal cysts or Pilonidal abscess or tunnels in the skin. The cyst develops by the tailbone, but it is usually formed underneath the skin. The pilonidal Sinus can be described as tiny holes that are present within the skin. These tunnels are full of fluid and, most times it appears at the top in the buttocks.
The cysts are mostly made up of hair dirt, debris and debris and can cause extreme discomfort. It also releases blood and a foul smell.
What causes Pilonidal infection
There is still confusion about the primary reason behind the development in Pilonidal Sinus. The exact reason for this disease is not yet known. Many believe that changing hormones are the primary reason behind Pilonidal Sinus. Women who are puberty are susceptible to this condition. Certain activities, like sitting for long periods of time can create friction, and hair begins to grow.

Signs of Infection
A majority of the time people don’t have any evident signs. Some people may experience a dimple kind of depression. But, when the depression develops the cyst develops. The symptoms one could encounter when dealing with this Pilonidal gland are listed below.
- There may be constant pain standing or sitting for long periods of time.
- The cyst can become swollen.
- As the infection progresses it will cause the area to become red, and you’ll notice the area as a sore.
- Sometimes, it may result in a hole appearing in the skin.
Surgical Treatment
It has been noted that when the Pilonidal cyst grows and forms sinus cavities beneath the skin, it needs to be treated quickly. Pilonidal Sinus Doctors frequently recommend surgery to eliminate the cyst completely to address this condition. Doctors generally use two different surgical procedures:
1) Incision and Drainage
2) Cystectomy
In the initial procedure doctors cut and eliminate the cyst. The second procedure doctors will eliminate the entire cyst along with the tissues.
