Difference between gallbladder stones and kidney stones
Both are called stones but they’re two completely different conditions.
The location, causes, symptoms and treatment of gallstones and kidney stones are different. They do share one thing: abdominal pain. It is important to distinguish between these two types of pain if you are experiencing intense, sharp abdominal pain.
Dr. Azhar Alam and his team are specialists in Gallbladder stones. We provide the most up-to-date kidney stone treatments and pain management services to offer you quick relief.
Understanding Gallstones
The gallbladder, a small organ that is located below your liver on the right side your abdomen, is responsible for storing bile. Its function is to store bile, a digestive fluid and then release it into the small intestine.
Sometimes fluids in your gallbladder can harden into gallstones. Gallstones can result from cholesterol buildup, high levels of bilirubin or bilirubin.
Gallstones affect about 10-15% of Americans at one time or another. Although gallstones do not always cause symptoms, they can lead to:
- A sudden, intense pain in the upper right/center of the abdomen
- Between the shoulder blades, back pain
- Right shoulder pain
- Nausea or vomiting
Gallstones are more common among women than they are in men. Gallstones that cause pain are not self-limiting and require gallbladder surgery to remove them.

Recognizing kidney stones
There are two kidneys. They are located just below your ribcage on either side your spine. The kidneys filter out waste from your blood and convert it into urine.
Kidney stones are formed when the kidneys accumulate higher than normal levels of certain minerals, sodium, and other substances. Calcium, oxalate and phosphate are the most common types.
Kidney stones are more common than gallstones in men than in women, but they are less common in men. About 19% of men will develop kidney stones during their lifetime. This compares to 9% for women.
Symptoms from kidney stones usually don’t occur when they form. It can be painful if they get into your kidneys, or your ureter.
